We are excited to announce the 10th IEEE Signal Intelligence Challenge!

This years motto is "Messages from the past", taking all participants on a journey through time. Messages from past challenges are mixed in with new ones.

In teams of 2-4 motivated students, you will compete to find the hidden messages transmitted by us, via radio but also through our matrix communications channel and this website. As in the last years, there are prizes waiting to be claimed! All info concerning the event is collected and published on our Event-Page.

You are already motivated and can't wait to start? Feel free to check out our Presentation of the ISIC at GECON. There, you can get some insights into challenges from 2022 and already train your problem-solving skills.

TLDR; Kick-off Event: 23.04.2026, 18:00 at CEL (Seminarraum 2.OG, CEL, building 06.45 at Campus West). We will introduce you to the tools and techniques you can use to solve the challenges, especially help with capturing a real radio signal. We will also give you the chance to find your team members, so come to the Kick-Off even if you haven't found your team yet!

Event Report: After Work Beer December 2025

On December 11, 2025, the last IEEE SB Karlsruhe After Work Beer event of 2025 took place at Pfannestiel. A total of 16 participants took the opportunity to meet and discuss their interests and possible IEEE events in 2026.

After a short introductory round, we discussed two dates for presentations in the Science Spotlight event series. We co-organize them with the Institute of Radio Frequency Engineering and Electronics (IHE) on January 29th, 2026, and February 5th, 2026. The first talk is presented by Dr. Grzegorz Adamiuk from Airbus Defence and Space on the topic "In 90 Minutes Around the World: Engineering of Radar Satellites for Earth Observation." Registration for attendance is now open. To register, please follow this link: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/531906. This will help us plan refreshments after the presentation and provide an opportunity to speak with the speaker. The second talk will be given by Dr. Ing. Martin Kunert, a retired radar expert formerly working at Robert Bosch GmbH. The topic of the second talk will be "Imaging Radar for Cars - The Big Challenges Ahead. Please register at the following link: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/531911 to help us plan refreshments after the presentation.

A few members of the local student rocket university group introduced themselves and discussed possible collaborations with the IEEE student branch. A possible venue of collaboration is the organization of a space engineering workshop under the umbrella of our Science Spotlight talk series. Possible topics and speakers will be evaluated together with the student rocket university group, and a date at the end of the summer term is preferred.

The German Microwave Conference will soon happen (9.3.26 - 11.3.26) at the KIT. It is co-hosted by IHE, and possible collaborations with the IEEE student branch are evaluated. Some help for logistical tasks like joining the participants on the tour to Campus North as local guides and providing some helping hands in exchange for participation is possible. Interested students should send an email to info@ieee-ka.de so we can put you in touch with the organizers.

In 2025, there was no signal intelligence challenge hosted by the IEEE student branch. We decided to hold another edition of the signal intelligence challenge in 2026. This time it should start on April 15th, 2026, and should run through May 6th, 2026. This should provide us with some better opportunities with good weather. Oliver Fritz from the Communications Engineering Lab (CEL) will help out with running the challenge and organizing the events.

The next After Work Beer is on February 12, 2026, we will elect a new executive committee and thus we are looking for active IEEE student members who want to take a role at the IEEE student branch.

After Work Beer December 11th, 2025

After an exciting four weeks of puzzles, the ninth edition of the ISIC came to a worthy conclusion at the traditional Thanksgiving event of the IEEE Student Branch Karlsruhe. The teams competed for points for submitted solutions until the very last hours. This year, the teams successfully received messages from a parallel universe.

The order of the teams was as follows: 1st place went to DavidsJünger with 1352 points, neck and neck with the Transformed Fourien with 1258 points. Third place went to Team Chilikaese with 514 points, just ahead of SpaceRift in 4th place with 417 points. Fifth place went to Team Toaster with 103 points. Congratulations again to all the teams.

This year, Dr.-Ing. Noha El Gemayel gave a presentation supported by her colleagues at Swift Navigation titled "From Carrier Phase Tracking to Robust cm-level Accuracy Positioning for Automotive”. After a (much needed) introduction to GNSS, we had a fruitful discussion on localization accuracy using different technologies.

After the detailed technical presentation, the ISIC award ceremony took place. The first team received a LimeSDR mini 2.0, and second andd third place got an RTL-SDR kit. This was kindly sponsored by the company PROCITEC. The prizes and gifts from Mathworks went to all participating teams. In addition, each team received certificates and a voucher for a debriefing in the restaurant “Schwarzer Kater” in Karlsruhe.

Once again, we would like to thank our sponsors PROCITEC and Mathworks for the prizes. We would also like to thank the Communications Engineering Lab (CEL) for the facilities and the IEEE Germany Section for the financial and organizational support.

Ankündigung: IEEE SB KA ISIC 2024!

We are excited to announce the 9th IEEE Signal Intelligence Challenge!

This years motto is "Rifts and Receivers", taking all participants to a rift to a parallel dimension. Fortunately, this rift transmits unconventional messages.

An interdimensional rift has opened up right over the Communications Engineering Lab at KIT. And it seems at the other side of the rift, there is a dimension quite close to ours with a different intitute researching communication engineering. Help us receive, decode and decrypt their signals so we can learn how similar this dimension actually is and maybe we can learn something about their customs and their research.
So help us doing some spontaneous sociology research and @RR#Listen to the rift!#isic
